Google chrome is unresponsive. Relaunch now?

This will fix your error message of, Google chrome is unresponsive. Relaunch now?

When clicking on a link in an email, you receive a popup message stating, “Google Chrome is unresponsive. Relaunch now?” It doesn’t matter if you click Yes or No, it’s not fixing the issue. Nothing happens.

I believe this occurs when you have multiple Chrome accounts. You’ve signed into Chrome with your google username so that you can sync the data between other instances of Chrome. Maybe you have one on your pc, one on your laptop, one on your tablet, or whatever other devices you use. It’s a nice feature. But sometimes technology likes to have a good laugh at us.

The fix that has worked for me (after trying several) is simple. As simple as refreshing your Google Profile for Chrome.

  1. First – Close all instances of Chrome, including the chrome tray icon if you’re used to allowing Chrome to run apps in the background. But check for the tray icon, because you may have inadvertently set it or it was set during an update.
  2. Now that everything Chrome has been closed, use Windows Explorer to navigate to %LOCALAPPDATA%\Google\Chrome\User Data\ (just copy that link and paste it into your address bar. It should pull up something like C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data
  3. Rename the Default folder within to “Backup default” or anything else you want in case things go horribly wrong and you want to restore to the state you were having the issue.
  4. Open Chrome and let it re-sync extensions, bookmarks, etc.

Click on a link in an email and watch as it actually opens the URL in your Chrome browser. Smile. Walk away from the monitor to stretch out a bit. If you have several extensions, it can take some time for them all to re-sync. You may as well smile while you’re doing that as well. Enjoy life – it’s the only one you have.
